  The Historic Heights Fire Station

  The original Houston Heights Fire Station No. 14 is located at Yale and 12th Street, approximately 4 miles north of downtown Houston, and is the last remaining municipal facility from the era when the Heights was a separate municipality. Houston's first public meeting hall, City Hall, fire station, and jail were all constructed in 1914 at a time when horse-drawn fire wagons were still the primary means of transportation. When it became Station Number 14 in 1918, it would remain that way until 1987, when it was permanently decommissioned for the last time. The Houston Heights Association voted in the early millennium to save the building and restore it to its former splendor, and they were successful. After repairing the building and installing vintage carriage-style doors in homage to the horse-drawn carriages of the early twentieth century, when the corral was located directly behind the fire station, The H.H.A. was able to reopen the corral. After being purchased by the Houston Height Association in 1979, the property has since grown to become one of the most popular outdoor wedding venues in the city of Houston.   Chateau Bellevue is a Victorian-era mansion in downtown Austin, built in 1874 and expanded in 1892 under owner Major Ira Hobart Evans, a Union Army veteran and the youngest Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives. Its stained glass windows and intricate wooden detailing make it one of the last remaining examples of Victorian architecture in the city, and it holds both Texas Historic Landmark (1965) and City of Austin Historic Landmark (1974) status. The venue has been owned and operated by the Austin Woman's Club, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, since 1929. The mansion offers a sequence of spaces for weddings and private events, from the Grand Entryway Foyer with its stained glass and hand-carved woodwork to the Grand Ballroom, which seats up to 175 guests beneath hardwood flooring and a raised stage for a band or DJ. Outdoors, the brick Ceremony Courtyard seats up to 165 guests facing its magnolia tree, or up to 150 facing the Chateau itself, with an adjoining terrace suited to cocktail hour. The proceeds from the Azalea Trail are used to support the following ongoing projects: Louise Stevenson, a founding member of the River Oaks Garden Club, was the driving force behind the organization's inception. She persuaded her next-door neighbor, Hennie Cottingham, to join her in forming some sort of civic beautification organization to address the critical need for civic beautification in the River Oaks neighborhood. When the Garden Club's first official meeting was held on October 27, 1927, it was attended by 29 members, and it marked the beginning of a thriving and growing organization that was eventually admitted into the Garden Club of America in 1938. The members of the club quickly gained knowledge in the areas of gardening, garden design, horticulture, and flower arranging, among other things. They used their newfound knowledge to encourage others to get involved in improving the planted environment in Houston.
