The Neill-Cochran House Museum is an 1856 Greek Revival mansion built by local builder Abner Cook, standing as one of Austin's oldest residences. Owned and operated by the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in Texas since 1958, the museum preserves more than a century of Austin history — from its years as a school for the Blind and a Civil War-era hospital to four generations of the Cochran family's residence — and is home to the only intact slave quarters still standing in the city. Kim Su Tran La was born in Vietnam, and she, her husband, and their seven children fled to Houston in 1980, fleeing the communist regime that had taken over their country at the time. Mother-in-law Mama La was able to memorize more than 250 recipes before opening the first KIM SON Restaurant, thanks to her extensive knowledge of Vietnamese cuisine, which she received from her in-laws. In a short period of time, her food amassed a large following of thousands of followers, as well as the admiration and loyalty of many of Vietnam's top restaurant cities. The first KIM SON store was located in Vinh Long, but it was eventually closed as a result of the communist takeover of the country in 1975.
