Built beginning in 1829 by French emigre Pierre Soule — a Louisiana U.S. Senator and criminal lawyer who died in the mansion's third-floor bedroom in 1870 — the property has served as an elegant manor, an orphan asylum, a jazz parlor, and a family-owned restaurant over nearly two centuries.
