The Island House sits on a private island on the banks of the Stono River. SC Society Hall, designed by Gabriel Manigault and built between 1799-1804, is an amazing event venue and one of America's most historic buildings. Although we are mostly known for elegant weddings, SC Society Hall is suitable for a wide range of special events including lectures, board meetings, luncheons, cocktail parties, baby showers, photo shoots, recitals, graduations, corporate gatherings and more. Featuring an elegant ballroom upstairs and two flex spaces downstairs, we are an open canvas waiting to help your vision come to life. A LITTLE HISTORY OF THE SC SOCIETY & THE HALL ... IN THE MIDDLE 1730s, a French Huguenot named Elisha Poinsett owned a tavern in Charleston, but his business was not doing well. Several friends agreed to help him an evening or two each week. Since charity was their reason for meeting, they decided to contribute two bits (sixteen pence) a week into a fund to help any of their members with a need. The group’s reputation grew and they became known as the “two-bit society.” After Poinsett’s business no longer needed their help, they formalized their association with the idea that charity would be their reason for being and education would be their main charity. The Provincial General Assembly incorporated them as the French Society on May 1, 1751, and King George II confirmed it at the Court of St. James on December 20, 1752. Soon afterward, the name was changed to the South Carolina Society and began including non-French members. They later purchased a block of land between George and Wentworth streets, cut a new street through it (the present Society Street), sold all the lots but one, and on that lot built a school for orphan boys. Toward the century’s close, the Society gave the school to the city of Charleston which eventually moved the school to Rutledge Avenue and renamed it the High School of Charleston. The Society then built the South Carolina Society Hall at 72 Meeting Street as a school for female orphans and indigents, and as a meeting place. The first meeting was was held July 24, 1804. The first floor was used to school orphans and indigents, while the second floor was a ballroom for social purposes. In 1826 the first floor became a secondary school with both a Male Academy and Female Academy, both of which closed in 1841. Since then the hall has been used for dance school (“Cotillion”), weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, and business meetings—as well as a motion picture location.

The Cooper River Room provides a spectacular indoor event venue for up to 150 seated guests for your main reception. The walls are covered in lovely paintings depicting traditional Lowcountry scenery. Hand-forged iron chandeliers shed a pleasant glow over the festivities that take place here. A beautiful focal point within this area is a seven-foot gas fireplace with a 12-inch mantel. The Owner's Suite, located right off the main event space, is the ideal place to get ready. The beautiful aesthetic of Italian brick walls and travertine floors here facilitates comfortable and convenient event preparations. This location also has a specialized catering kitchen with multiple warming ovens and serving stations on-site. The Cooper River Room offers a variety of event amenities to couples who choose to host their wedding day there. The facility is available for a five-hour event, with complimentary on-site parking, a dedicated venue manager, and event security included. The facility provides tables and chairs for your convenience, and other vendors are welcome to cater events conducted here.

Legare Waring House is a wedding venue in Charleston, South Carolina. It was built in the 1840s. Imagine dancing the night away under moss draped oaks and exchanging vows while surrounded by natural beauty — this venue allows you to do just that. The mansion is decorated in classic Charleston colors and furnishings, giving it a lovely and attractive setting for a wedding. As home to the peninsula's only outdoor music venue, The Refinery contains a unique mix of spaces that can host a wide range of events where we can host up to 2,000 people in a full buyout. When not a full buyout, our property can be broken into 5 individual event spaces both indoor and outdoor ranging from a max of 100 people up to 1500 people, including our 1956 Passenger Railcar.
