1102 East is a wedding and event venue set on a historic property in East Austin, beneath a canopy of hundred-year-old pecan and native elm trees. Once home to the landscape design firm Big Red Sun, the grounds have been reimagined for events while keeping the character of the original 1930s bungalow and its mature gardens. The venue pairs indoor and open-air spaces for weddings, private events, chef-inspired dinner parties, and intimate live music concerts. A barn-inspired, steel-framed open-air structure offers a covered setting for dinners, ceremonies, and dance parties, while a newly expanded front garden entrance adds more than 2,500 square feet of landscaped event space. The chapel, on the outskirts of Texas Women's University, is a hidden sanctuary that has hosted weddings since September 1939, a few months before Eleanor Roosevelt's dedication. The exquisite internal stain glass windows complement the natural splendor that surrounds the Little Chapel. On saw-pierced and riveted brass lighting, and woodwork completed in beech, hand carved woodwork on the pews, the Little Chapel in-the-Woods' rich symbolism delicately conveys "Woman Ministering to Human Needs." Architect O'Neil Ford designed the Chapel, which is 90 feet long and 24 feet broad. During the Great Depression, it was built as a project of the National Youth Administration and dedicated by former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. The Little Chapel in the Woods is steeped in history, and every piece in the chapel is imbued with the aesthetic fingerprint of young women artists. A unique mix of towering bull pines, large post oaks, pin oaks, burr oaks, and live oaks grew alongside massive post oaks, pin oaks, burr oaks, and live oaks. The forest was alive with birds and there were acres of yellow coreopsis. Our goal has been to make this incredible setting our home while maintaining the natural beauty and calm that drew us to the property in the first place. We wanted to retain the solitude, tranquility, and serenity of the old forest by surrounding our new home inside it, as well as develop and conserve the unique woodland setting we had fallen in love with. We wanted to capture the sounds and sensations of the woods while also honoring the land and paying homage to early twentieth-century Texas. Everything we did in the construction of Dos Arbolitos was done with a distinct feeling of care. We tried to remember that special feeling we had the first day we walked onto the land and were calmed by the cool breezes in the middle of summer, enchanted by the choir of birds singing in the virgin forest, and eventually swept away by the natural woodland beauty of this place we knew would become our home with each step we took.
