About Immortals Lion Dance
An exciting lion dance troupe from the city of Los Angeles. Jeff Chan formally founded the "Chinese Lion Dancers of Los Angeles" in the beginning of the 1960s. In order to teach them martial arts and lion dancing, Jeff took in a group of children from the Chinatown district of Los Angeles. He was the first to form a group that was independent of a family association or Gung Fu academy. Many of the founding members still perform with their adult offspring nowadays. As these talented Gung Fu warriors demonstrate their physical strength and weaponry proficiency, the vividly colorful costumes of the joyful lions and vicious dragons, the sounds of drums, gongs, and cymbals, and the fragrance of incense and firecrackers thrill the senses. Based on Chinese tradition about the "Eight Immortals," the group chose the moniker "Immortals" in 1978. General Kwan Yu from the Three Kingdoms Period is symbolized by the colors of our group, which are red and black. General Kwan stands for valor, bravery, integrity, and commitment. He is considered as a hero without equal and a superb combatant. He also serves as the Chinese martial arts' patron saint.
