New Deal Fish Market, Inc.

In 1928, John and Anna Cesarale opened a fish store in East Cambridge, Massachusetts, just a few streets from where it is now. The husband and wife combination hails from Gaeta, an Italian seaport town just south of Rome. They began their journey in America selling fresh fish, food, and household goods to the local community of immigrants and blue collar workers, as they came from fishing families. The current name "New Deal Fish Market" was coined in the early to mid 1930s to memorialize a program known as The New Deal, which was created by then-President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The New Deal, as history has demonstrated, aided America's recovery from the Great Depression. In the early 1940s, John, Anna, and a few family members bought a modest storefront establishment. They relocated the fish market to that location and spent the rest of their life in the apartment above. Sal Fantasia, John and Anna's nephew, and his wife Franca, took over the torch in the late 1970s. With Sal's exceptional eye for obtaining the greatest quality fish and Franca's engaging personality and wonderful cuisine, Sal and Franca established a loyal following of consumers. Various close and extended family members have volunteered in the fish market over the years. Carl, Sal and Franca's son, left a 10-year career in the energy industry to take a chance and carry on his family's legacy just after the century began. Today, Carl and his team of fishmongers cater to the demands of discerning seafood connoisseurs by providing the finest hand-cut fish and unrivaled customer service.
