About Tiffany Smith
From the Caribbean diaspora, Tiffany Smith is an interdisciplinary artist who specializes in photography, film, installation, and design. Smith makes photographic portraits, site-responsive installations, user-engaged experiences, and assemblages centered on identity, representation, cultural ambiguity, and relocation using plant matter, design and home decor elements, pattern, and costuming as cultural signifiers. Constructed environments that aim to articulate cultural subjectivities that oscillate between tourist and native roles are informed by visual references from a variety of multi-cultural influences. Smith's work focuses on the characteristics that distinguish communities of people of color in particular, how they are recognized and portrayed, and how they persist. Smith earned an MFA in Photo/Video from School of Visual Arts and a BFA in Photography from Savannah College of Art and Design. International exhibitions of her work have taken place, including ones at Photoville, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, and The National Art Gallery of the Bahamas. She has displayed public art pieces in Marcus Garvey Park during Flux Art Fair and Newark Penn Station as part of The Gateway Project/P.E.S. Recess Assembly and Montserrat College of Art have both recently hosted solo shows. Tiffany Smith is a graduate of the Bronx A.I.M. (37) program, a 2018 NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellow in Interdisciplinary Work, and a 2019 EnFoco Photography Fellowship Awardee. Tiffany Smith, who is located in Brooklyn, New York, is currently a co-director of Ortega y Gasset Projects.
