Arcadia at Edgewood

Arcadia was a region in ancient Greece that came to be associated with a desire for pastoral scenery and a sense of harmony with nature, and it became a symbol of this desire. In the minds of many Renaissance writers, it conjured up visions of a long-gone Edenic paradise, complete with pastoral simplicity. Artistic endeavors such as Thomas Cole's Arcadian or Pastoral State, among other works, attempted to capture the beauty of the landscape (above). In the following words, the Spanish poet Lope de Vega described the concept of the Arcadian countryside: Does not the pleasantness of this place provide sufficient compensation for any time spent here, or for any danger that may arise as a result of it? Why can't you see how everything is working together to transform this place into something truly divine? Do you not notice how the grasses outperform the emeralds in terms of color...? Is it not true that these stately trees appear to have maintained their flourishing old age, with the only happiness of their seat being that it is clothed with a continuous spring, because no beauty should ever fade in this place? Is it not true that the air breathes health, which the birds (who are both delightful to the ear and the eye) solemnize on a daily basis with the sweet consent of their voices? Isn't every echo in this place a piece of perfect music?" Lope de Vega was a Spanish aristocrat who lived in the 16th century.
