The History of Rockwood Manor Retreats and Events After leaving Washington, D.C., Carolyn Gangwer Caughey (pronounced "Coy") traveled west along the Old Conduit Road (now MacArthur Boulevard) to her newly purchased estate near Great Falls. Mountains of tall cedars, poplars, and oaks cover rock-studded hillsides that gently slope down to a stream valley. A name for Mrs. Caughey's country estate was suggested to her by the natural elements almost immediately: Rockwood. Carolyn was a well-to-do socialite whose ancestors traced their roots back to the American Revolution. She was also a successful businesswoman who had a passion for architecture and a keen eye for profit in the real estate market. According to Who's Who in the Nation's Capital, she is "active in civic betterment, particularly in relation to better-constructed and better-planned homes," among other things. It also mentions that she was responsible for designing one of the largest apartment buildings in the nation's capital at the time. As a result, many of her close friends were not surprised when she revealed that she had designed and personally supervised the construction of her new home. Visiting auctions and antique dealers in the area on a regular basis assisted her in the furnishing of her country estate. Celebrations This historic manor house, which can accommodate up to 120 guests for a ceremony on the wooded Patio, followed by cocktails on the Veranda and a sit-down dinner in the rustic elegance of Brooke Hall, is the focal point of our property. When the party is over, the Hoover Hall ballroom and festive Sun Porch are transformed into a two-level party space for dessert and dancing. River Farm occupies 25 acres of Potomac riverfront property in Alexandria, Virginia, once part of George Washington's farmland and now the headquarters of the American Horticultural Society. The grounds pair an 18th-century Manor House with formal gardens, a brick-pathed pergola walk, and open lawns running down to the river, giving couples a choice of indoor and outdoor settings for a ceremony or reception. The property offers several distinct spaces for events. The Garden Walk, with its trellis pergola and seasonal plantings, is the most popular ceremony location. The Ballroom, inside the Manor House, features a hardwood floor, a crystal chandelier, and local artwork, while the adjoining Parlor offers a smaller, more intimate room with a baby grand piano. A climate-controlled tent over the Slated Patio, with adjustable Palladian window walls, extends the property's capacity for larger receptions. Newton White Mansion is a Neo-Georgian estate built in 1939 by architect William Lawrence Bottomley for Captain Newton H. White of the U.S. Navy. Set in Mitchellville, Maryland, adjacent to the 586-acre Enterprise Golf Course, the mansion combines historic architecture with a glass-enclosed contemporary atrium — a pairing that makes it well suited for both formal and celebratory events. The mansion accommodates up to 240 guests seated and 300 standing across six large rooms, two side porches, and the glass atrium, which overlooks the 13th hole of the golf course. A large brick patio with a central fountain, surrounded by lush gardens and woodlands, hosts outdoor gatherings of up to 200 guests. The venue is managed by Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation and is available year-round for weddings, corporate meetings, retreats, holiday parties, milestone anniversaries, and similar events. Glenview Mansion is a 1926 Neo-Classical Revival estate listed on the National Register of Historic Places, set within Rockville's 153-acre Civic Center Park. Built to entertain, the mansion retains its original character — exotic marble floors, formal boxwood gardens, ornamental fountains, and stone archways — while serving today as a full-service event venue operated by the City of Rockville, Maryland. The mansion's first floor opens into a suite of interconnected social rooms, each with its own character: the marble-floored Conservatory with dazzling lighting, the window-lined Dining Room and Library, and the Living Room with direct access to the Formal Gardens. Every rental includes use of the entire home, the front mall, and the surrounding grounds, which can accommodate up to 200 guests for ceremonies, receptions, and tented events. National Golf Club is a private, family-friendly country club established in 1965 in Fort Washington, Maryland, minutes from National Harbor and roughly 20 minutes from Washington, D.C. and Alexandria. The 18-hole, par-72 course was designed by Ted Robinson Sr. and plays to 6,742 yards across rolling terrain with elevation changes and challenging wavy greens. The clubhouse hosts events for members and the public alike, including weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, proms, anniversary and birthday celebrations, charity events, corporate meetings, and golf outings. Two recently renovated event spaces offer golf course views and accommodate groups from intimate gatherings to receptions of up to 300 guests. This private dining room is bright and airy, with slate floors, large windows, live plants, and a fireplace to keep you warm in the winter. This room simulates the feel of being outside without the need for a rain plan to be in place. The Presidential Room can accommodate up to 40 people. There are large windows in this semi-private room that provide a beautiful view of the Potomac. Featuring beautiful chandeliers, a fireplace, and leather seats, this room is sure to make you feel like a presidential guest in the White House! The Lafayette Room can accommodate up to 60 people. The most opulent of all our rooms, with a ballroom-like atmosphere. This room, in addition to having stunning views of the Potomac, is also decorated with exquisite chandeliers and exquisite furnishings. In our Lafayette room, which is adjacent to our patio, a portion of the space will be reserved for your event, as well (weather permitting). The Pergola Covered Patio can accommodate up to 55 people. Our patio provides a panoramic view of the natural beauty that surrounds us. With bistro lights strung across the ceiling, a wall of ivy, and topiaries, this could be the best seat in the house! In the event of inclement weather, your group would be able to use the Lafayette Room as a makeshift shelter. To reserve this space, a guarantee of a minimum food and beverage spending amount is required.

As a National Trust for Historic Preservation site, we believe that all Americans have a right to learn about their own history by visiting the places that surround us. This historic site is dedicated to filling in the gaps of our cultural heritage, particularly the stories of enslaved and freed Black communities, as well as the stories of their descendants. Take a look at our interpretation themes. All of our properties are on 126 historic acres in Alexandria, Virginia, and they include two historic properties and one working farm. It was built in 1805, and it was given to Nelly Custis and Lawrence Lewis as a gift by President George Washington. The site was used as a plantation, and the couple enslaved over 90 people while operating it. The Pope-Leighey House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, is also located on the grounds, where visitors can explore and be inspired by the Usonian architecture and a vision for affordable, well-designed housing that Wright envisioned. We co-own the land with our partner, Arcadia Farm for Sustainable Agriculture, whose mission is to create a more equitable and sustainable local food system in the greater Los Angeles area. Our activities are spread out throughout the grounds and trails, and they are designed to promote learning as well as wellbeing as well as respite and enjoyment of the natural environment and its history. Immersive experiences, exhibitions, performances, and thought-provoking art are used to bring these stories and discussions to life. Across the grounds of Woodlawn and Pope-Leighey House, two historic homes situated on 120 acres of agricultural land farmed by our non-profit partner Arcadia, are intertwined tales of community transformation. Historic Blenheim is a Civil War-era estate in the City of Fairfax, Virginia, operated by the City as an event venue and interpretive center. The centerpiece is a Greek-Revival/Georgian brick house built around 1859 for the Willcoxon family, where Federal soldiers left graffiti on the interior walls during the winter of 1862-63 — a detail that has made the property a stop on both the Virginia Civil War Trails and the Northern Virginia Graffiti Trail. The adjoining Civil War Interpretive Center houses a gallery with a full-sized replica of the house's attic and glass walls that look out over the historic grounds.
