    Capitol Theatre Ballroom

1015 Main St, Wheeling, WV 26003, USA
    • Spaces for 250 Guests

The Capitol Theatre Ballroom sits on the second floor of the Capitol Theatre, a Beaux-Arts building that opened in downtown Wheeling, West Virginia, in 1928. The room was never meant to be a ballroom. It was built as the lobby for an eight-story hotel planned above the theatre, and its foundation and massive steel beams were engineered to carry those eight additional stories. The hotel never went up. The ballroom is built to reconfigure — theatre style, classroom style, board style, u-shape, hollow square, whatever an event calls for. A permanent stage carries built-in audio and projection. Elevator or stairs reach it. Since the theatre reopened in 2009, the room has drawn national touring musicians for intimate concerts, comedians, and speaking engagements with U.S. political leaders. It also hosts wedding receptions and other private events. Two more spaces round out the theatre: the Lobby, suited to press conferences and small receptions, and the Beaux-Arts Mezzanine, reached by the grand staircases and set for cocktail receptions and intimate dinners.

High on a hilltop in Marshall County, West Virginia, Grand Vue Park looks out across the Ohio Valley, where rolling hills and rivers fill the view below. It is a recreational park that opens its grounds to weddings, banquets, and gatherings of every kind, and much of its welcome comes from the setting itself. Guests find a choice of indoor and open-air settings. The Banquet Hall is a customizable room framed by wooden beams, with an adjoining patio just outside — an easy fit for wedding receptions and milestone celebrations. Beyond it, the Overlook Terrace sets ceremonies against the valley below, and a courtyard offers another spot to exchange vows in the open air. For reunions, graduation parties, and cookouts, a collection of shelters hosts groups from a few dozen up to 200, several with grills, a kitchen, and the same long view over the valley. There is plenty to keep a celebration going once the toasts are done. Ziplines and aerial courses, swimming pools, hiking trails, disc golf, and mini golf spread across the park, while cabins, treetop villas, and an RV park give guests a place to stay — turning a wedding or family reunion into a whole weekend rather than a single afternoon.

Wine Cellar Park is a city park in Dunbar, West Virginia, home to Anderson Lake, which is stocked with trout each year and known for great fishing and beautiful scenery. A scenic walking trail and a playground round out the grounds. The shelter houses eight picnic tables and two grills and rents for $95 a day between 9 a.m. and dark. A smaller shelter with two picnic tables of its own sits nearby for more casual get-togethers. The fireplace shelter sits within a few feet of the park's main parking lot, keeping loading and unloading simple, and it's close to both the playground and handicapped-accessible restrooms. Canaan Valley Resort State Park occupies a mountain valley near Davis, West Virginia, where a year-round lodge sits amid ski terrain, hiking and biking trails, and a championship golf course. That landscape shapes the events held here: couples can hold an outdoor ceremony reached by a scenic chairlift ride, framed by the surrounding mountains, or keep the ceremony indoors, then carry the celebration into recreation that ranges from sporting clays and archery to an outdoor pool. More than 25,000 square feet of function space spans a dozen rooms, from small private meeting rooms to two large reception venues — Bear Paw Lodge and the Pavilion — that each seat several hundred guests for banquets and weddings. Floor plans reconfigure for theater-style, classroom, banquet, or standing-reception layouts, and a culinary team handles catering and full-service banquets while a conference-services team supports planning. Complimentary high-speed internet reaches the meeting rooms. On-site lodging keeps groups together, from a 160-room lodge to cabins and cottages around the property.

India Center is a cultural and event facility in South Charleston, West Virginia. Conceived in the early 1980s and completed in 1995, the two-story brick building comprises about 15,000 square feet and was built to house social and cultural activities for the community as a whole. The main floor holds a multipurpose hall that seats 300, a stage of roughly 1,000 square feet with a changing room, and a balcony that runs the length of the hall; the hall floor is finished for indoor activities such as badminton. A library with a study area and office occupies the same level. At the balcony level, a 1,000-square-foot prayer hall, open to all religions, accommodates 150. The lower level contains a 3,000-square-foot dining hall, a fully equipped kitchen, and a conference room. The building is available for private rental, and its hall has been set for weddings and receptions. The Center's stated mission is to preserve Indian art and culture and share it with the people of West Virginia, alongside community programs such as free yoga and meditation classes and educational seminars.

    The Harpers Ferry Event Barn

1084 Washington St, Bolivar, WV 25425, USA
    • Spaces for 133 Guests

The Barn of Harpers Ferry is a working music room and full bar first, an event venue second — and that order is the point. Most weekends its wooden interior fills with live performers, a roster that runs from established touring acts to up-and-coming talent playing bluegrass, Americana, jazz, funk, blues, and reggae beneath string lights and chalkboard menus. Craft beer, a full bar, and welcoming bartenders keep the room easy. The rhythm carries through the week: an Old Tyme Session every Wednesday, an open mic on the second Sunday of each month, stand-up comedy nights, and the annual Highland Games every first Saturday in October. That same barn, set in the historic tri-state corner of Harpers Ferry where West Virginia, Virginia, and Maryland meet, opens up for private gatherings that range from intimate weddings to fundraisers, dances, birthday parties, and large festivals.

Sandstone barged up the Ohio River from Isabella, Pennsylvania went into the clubhouse that has stood above Weirton since 1932 — a one-of-a-kind stone building from the depths of the Great Depression, when Weirton Steel bought the 150 acres of bluff it sits on. Williams Golf and Country Club grew from a nine-hole course, laid out by Emil 'Dutch' Loeffler and John McGlynn, into the par-72, 18-hole layout that has since hosted the USGA, the West Virginia Golf Association, the Tri-State PGA, and three West Virginia Opens. Celebrations here trace back nearly as far: a 1937 wedding on the front lawn of the club's stone Lodge once made the pages of Time. Today the Grand Ballroom carries that thread indoors, its hardwood floors and neutral decor accented with Swarovski crystals, while lawns overlooking the river and course serve as ceremony sites. The club hosts weddings, banquets, corporate gatherings, wine tastings, and themed dinners for as many as 200 guests, with plated menus from the executive chef's kitchen.

Cacapon Resort State Park spreads across more than 6,000 acres in the shadow of a folded mountain ridge in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle, and two very different buildings anchor it. The Old Inn was the first lodge built in the West Virginia state parks and forests system, and it still wears that history in its hand-hewn log beams and tongue-and-groove walls of wormy chestnut and knotty pine; twelve bedrooms and a single large gathering space host groups and reunions of up to 32. At the foot of Cacapon Mountain stands the system's newest lodge, a 120-room building with indoor and outdoor dining, a full spa, and views of the golf course. For events, the resort sets aside 11,931 square feet of conference space in rooms that range from an 18-seat boardroom to a hall seating 200 for a banquet, backed by on-site audio-visual equipment and event-planning assistance for weddings and reunions. Surrounding it all are a Robert Trent Jones Sr. golf course laid out in 1974, the Healing Waters Spa, two stocked fishing lakes, and a swimming beach, a deep bench of activities for guests with time between events.

Hillbrook Inn & Spa spreads across more than 30 secluded acres of Tudor-style buildings and woodland in Charles Town, West Virginia, minutes from Harpers Ferry and set on land that was once part of George Washington's original purchase. Its practical appeal is consolidation: ceremony, reception, dining, an on-site spa, and lodging in 19 guest rooms all sit on a single property. The spaces scale with the headcount. A signature wedding takes the estate exclusively for up to 150 guests; a pavilion tent handles receptions of up to 80; and the Main House dining room seats up to 50 for a plated meal indoors. Elopements and micro-weddings get their own setting in the Hidden Cottage, sized for parties of two to eight. Ceremonies can move around the grounds, from a bridge over Bullskin Creek to a round garden terrace or the terrace fountain. Catering is handled in-house, with executive chef Tom O'Hara's farm-focused menus offered plated, buffet, or cocktail-style, plus a post-wedding brunch the morning after.

Red brick rises to a gabled front on East German Street, at the center of historic Shepherdstown. The building went up in 1868 as the Methodist Episcopal Church; in 1947 the Men's Club of Shepherdstown bought it and renamed it the War Memorial Building for those who died in World War II. The Shepherdstown Community Club, a nonprofit, has maintained it as a community gathering place ever since. Two floors host events. At street level, the Gallery Room spans 1,370 square feet and holds up to 100 guests; a hanging system outfits the walls for art shows, while the open floor clears for cocktail receptions. North Bend State Park spreads across the rolling hills of West Virginia's Mid-Ohio Valley and takes its name from the horseshoe curve of the North Fork of the Hughes River. For groups, it works as a set of connected indoor and outdoor spaces. Meetings, retreats, and banquets settle into the lodge's two conference rooms — the Hughes Room and the Douglass Room, together 1,988 square feet of meeting space — with the full-service, 80-seat restaurant close at hand for meals between sessions. Larger gatherings move outdoors, where four event shelters and an open-air amphitheater are set out on the surrounding lawns. North Bend pairs them on purpose, suggesting the amphitheater be booked alongside Shelter #3 so an outdoor ceremony has a covered space nearby for the reception — and for cover if the weather turns. When the day winds down, guests stay on: 29 lodge rooms, nine cabins, and campground sites keep a wedding party or reunion together overnight, with miles of hiking trails and the 72-mile North Bend Rail Trail running out from the same grounds.

Its event facilities center on the C. Richard Foutche Clubhouse. Day-of logistics are handled on the grounds: wireless internet in the clubhouse, bar service arranged through the park, an approved-caterer list, and free paved parking for more than 200 cars. Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort

2300 MacCorkle Ave SE, Charleston, WV 25304, USA
    • Spaces for 300 Guests

Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort sits about 25 minutes northwest of the Las Vegas Strip, on land owned and operated by the Las Vegas Paiute Tribe and spread across three championship golf courses designed by Pete Dye. Its events arm, Events by Paiute, adapts to the occasion — weddings, milestone celebrations, corporate retreats, and more casual gatherings all have a place here. Much of that range comes down to a facility built to reconfigure. The Mountain View Room (1,500 square feet) and the Lakeside Room (3,500 square feet) each work on their own for a smaller, private setting, then combine into a single 5,000-square-foot space when the guest list calls for a full banquet. Floor-to-ceiling windows line the rooms, bringing in clear-sky light by day and sunset color by night, while a private foyer entrance, an outdoor terrace, and an adjoining lawn extend the celebration outside. Additional settings widen the options further: a 3,500-square-foot restaurant and bar, two outdoor terraces, and a private conference room, all served by on-site A/V and Wi-Fi. Wedding ceremonies can move outdoors to the lawn, weather permitting, trading the indoor rooms for open air and the resort's golf-course surroundings.
