It's like receiving an unexpected surprise when you visit the Los Angeles River Center and Gardens. This stunning event property, only minutes from downtown Los Angeles and right over the Los Angeles River, will fit many a bride's fantasy wedding destination. The Center is a well-kept secret, concealed behind ivy-covered walls. The entry is marked by a broad, circular brick driveway with a spreading ficus tree in the center, and the first look of the fountains, flowers, and serenity within is through the arched, wrought-iron gate. The courtyard at the entrance is a lovely way to begin your visit to the Center, but the carved wooden doors in the back soon draw you into the Main Courtyard, which is the perfect setting for a special occasion. The arcaded terraces of the Center's buildings surround the multi-level plaza on three sides. The breeze rustles the pepper trees, as roses, agapanthus, and daylilies soak up the sun in the beds. A three-tiered fountain sits in the midst of a tiled reflecting pool, surrounded on all four sides by terra cotta pots filled with flowers. An arched gateway in a stucco wall leads from the Main courtyard to the San Fernando Courtyard, another spacious patio with an adjoining lawn. This patio is dappled in shade and has a calm dignity thanks to a great old ficus tree. The lawn, which is surrounded by tree-lined walls, is frequently utilized for ceremonies, while the patio can be used for meals or dancing. The San Fernando Courtyard is its own private little universe, bordered on one side by the California Building and on the other three by high walls. The California Building is used for indoor events and major meetings. A Mexican-tile floor, arched windows, and a large, peaked roof flood the main event space with natural light. Tables and chairs are arranged beneath the skylight, with additional sitting accessible on the second-story walkway that circles the area. The winery traces its roots to the Azores' Island of St. Jorge, where the family's winemaking tradition spans hundreds of years. Its name honors Saint George — a symbol of strength and faith — and the property reflects that heritage through its Mediterranean-styled architecture and its lineup of Portuguese varietals planted alongside California classics. The estate produces Zinfandel, Verdelho, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Syrah, and Alicante Bouschet, each crafted with attention to the lighter color and full fruit flavor characteristic of the Portuguese style. Seven distinct event spaces accommodate private gatherings ranging from an intimate 35-guest seated dinner in the Turquoise Room to a 150-guest reception on the Sunset Terrace — a paver ceremony terrace with built-in market lights and vineyard views. Indoor options include the Legacy Room, a large banquet hall with 10-foot arched windows overlooking the hillside, and the Ruby Lounge, a fireplace lounge paired with a private patio. Acquired by Brookfield Properties in 2018, CMC is in the midst of an exciting $170-million redevelopment. As of January 2020, fashion showrooms and events have a new home in the CMC’s newly renovated Building C while Buildings A & B close to the public for renovation, relaunching in 2021 as a revitalized, mixed-use campus. Established in 1882, Spottswoode Estate is distinguished by the pre-Prohibition Victorian home depicted on their wine label. Spottswoode was christened by Mrs. Albert Spotts in 1910 and later acquired by Mary and Jack Novak in 1972. Mary released Spottswoode’s first Cabernet Sauvignon in 1982, exactly one hundred years after the estate’s founding. Today, Mary’s daughter Beth Novak Milliken manages the winery, and her daughter Lindy Novak serves as the winery’s Marketing Ambassador. Every year Spottswoode releases an Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and an Estate Sauvignon Blanc. In addition, Spottswoode produces a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon called Lyndenhurst, a dual-appellation Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc, and a limited-production Field Book Syrah. Committed to producing wines with integrity that faithfully reflect their grape origins, Spottswoode wines are especially known for their refined elegance, balance, and classic structure. Situated on the western edge of St. Helena at the foot of the Mayacamas mountains, the Spottswoode terroir is ideal for growing fine wine grapes. The alluvial clay loam from the Sulphur Creek fan provides superb drainage while cool maritime breezes passing through the gap between Spring Mountain and the Mayacamas range, allow the fruit to ripen slowly. Spottswoode's forty-two acres are planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon, with small blocks of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Sauvignon Blanc. They have farmed their grapes organically since 1985, and the vineyard was certified organic (CCOF) in 1992. The roles of winemaking and vineyard management are integrated at Spottswoode, and the individual attention given to each vineyard block contributes to the consistent quality and unique characteristics of their wines. The Estate has three historic buildings that were originally built circa 1884–1885. The Colonial Revival-style residence, with its famous “Spottswoode” arch over the stone pillar entry, is surrounded by formal gardens with plants that date back to the 1880s. The Victorian farmhouse serves as an office and tasting room, and the Kraft Cellar is a pre-Prohibition stone building where the Cabernet Sauvignon is barrel-aged. In 1999, Howard Backen designed the new winery in a style that honors the historic nature of our buildings. Spottswoode is among the first wineries to have adopted organics in the Napa Valley. They began farming our vineyard organically in 1985 and acquired California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) certification in 1992. Working closely with biodynamic specialists enables our farming to promote a living, breathing ecosystem.
