This family-owned restaurant, which is celebrating 30 years in business, serves upmarket Italian food, including handmade handcrafted pizzas and exquisite desserts. Arte Cafe officially opened its doors 26 years ago, but it all began when Dina Malta traveled all the way from Italy to New York in the 1960s. Robert, her son, was a college student when he launched his first restaurant in the early 1990s, when he was still in college. With the assistance of his mother, he was able to properly administer the establishment. She was the one who came up with all of the original recipes that are still in use today. "She had such a commanding presence and always ensured that the staff was preparing everything with the freshest, most genuine ingredients possible," her son, Robert, said of his mother. Our beautiful Clubhouse is in every way a home. It was painstakingly repaired after being built in 1900 as a wedding gift for Maria Vanderbilt Shepard and William Jay Schieffelin. The Wedgewood Suite is reserved for smaller, more intimate occasions. Hotel Belleclaire is a Beaux-Arts landmark hotel on Manhattan's Upper West Side, opened in 1903 and designed by architect Emery Roth in a distinctive blend of Art Nouveau and Secessionist style. The building received a landmark designation from New York City's Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1987 and completed a multimillion-dollar restoration in 2023 that returned it to its original splendor with modern conveniences throughout. Early guests included Mark Twain, Maxim Gorky, and Babe Ruth. Union Square has been a gathering area for about 170 years—for trade, entertainment, labor and political rallies, and relaxation. The park gets its name from its location at the crossroads of two important New York City thoroughfares, Bloomingdale Road (now Broadway) and Bowery Road (now Fourth Avenue). Union Square first opened to the public on July 19, 1839. Its paths, which wind through lushly landscaped lawns, were inspired by London's affluent residential squares. The design concentrated on a big central fountain, which was constructed for the completion of the Croton Aqueduct in 1842, and accentuated the park's oval shape (contained by an iron picket fence). Union Square became a significant commercial and residential area as New York City's downtown extended northward. The grounds of Union Square have hosted a variety of public gatherings, including parades, labor protests, political rallies, and official events such as the United States Sanitary Commission's Great Metropolitan Fair in 1864. Because of its significance in American labor history, the United States Department of the Interior designated Union Square Park as a National Historic Landmark in 1997.
