Although he did not cultivate vegetables or raise poultry here, he did have a horse for the grandkids to ride, several cows (mainly as pets), and a Brahma Bull named Baby. He referred to this place as his "farm" (his biggest pet of all). Our parents built the home as well as the movie theater, which is now known as The Ruby Chapel, in the early 1990s, and it served as their Texas residence for the subsequent 20 years. As they became older, they "downsized" the land until it was ultimately reduced to the current size of 7 acres.

The chapel, on the outskirts of Texas Women's University, is a hidden sanctuary that has hosted weddings since September 1939, a few months before Eleanor Roosevelt's dedication. The exquisite internal stain glass windows complement the natural splendor that surrounds the Little Chapel. On saw-pierced and riveted brass lighting, and woodwork completed in beech, hand carved woodwork on the pews, the Little Chapel in-the-Woods' rich symbolism delicately conveys "Woman Ministering to Human Needs." Architect O'Neil Ford designed the Chapel, which is 90 feet long and 24 feet broad. During the Great Depression, it was built as a project of the National Youth Administration and dedicated by former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. The Little Chapel in the Woods is steeped in history, and every piece in the chapel is imbued with the aesthetic fingerprint of young women artists. The stone walls take on a charming blue tint as the sunshine filters through the stained glass windows, and the exterior is surrounded by magnificent green landscapes.
