    Sister Cities Park

    210 N 18th St, Philadelphia, PA 19103, USA
    • Spaces for 400 Guests

Sister Cities Park sits at the midpoint of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, between City Hall and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, on a site that traces back to William Penn's 1682 plan for the city's public squares. Originally dedicated in 1976 to honor Philadelphia's Sister Cities program, the roughly 1.3-acre park was transformed in a 2012 renovation led by Center City District, turning a barren plaza into one of the nation's leading multigenerational parks. The park's centerpiece is a bluestone fountain shaped as an abstracted globe with Philadelphia at its center, its eleven geyser-like water spouts positioned to reflect the actual geographic distance to each of the city's Sister Cities. Alongside it, the Children's Discovery Garden offers a nature-inspired play space with winding pathways, a climbing net, push-button water jets, and a stream dam, while a shallow wading pond operates from late April through October and converts to the Imagination Playground in the cooler months. A 6,000-square-foot pollinator garden with more than 4,000 native plants borders the space, and Robert Indiana's AMOR sculpture, installed in 2016, anchors the park's public art. Sister Cities Café, built with structural glass walls and a green roof, offers indoor and outdoor seating overlooking the garden and parkway. The park lends itself to everything from children's birthday parties to wedding receptions, rehearsal dinners, and corporate gatherings, with Center City District's events team coordinating brand activations, corporate functions, and private celebrations on-site.

It transforms readily from an elegant reception with video walls and butlered hors d'oeuvres to a more relaxed gathering with lounge furniture and food trucks, and includes the adjoining Officers Quarters, a formal entrance and library often used as a green room or check-in area. Upstairs, the recently renovated Dining Room and Museum offers a more intimate setting of about 3,500 square feet, with wainscoting, gilded antique paintings, crystal chandeliers, and the First City Troop's own historical collection one floor below. In the 1920s, Sam and Anna Asarnow acquired a huge and lovely property in Somerset County, New Jersey, with the intention of using it as a summer vacation home for their family. Yes, you guessed it: this is the parcel of property that would subsequently be transformed into The Forest Lodge. Those who have visited in the past, and who still do so on occasion, are enthusiastic about the place's history. In addition to entertaining, the Asarnows liked inviting guests to come here for a day of leisure and entertainment. When friends had such a good time at the Lodge, they spread the word, and friends who came to visit quickly became friends of friends, and ultimately strangers began turning up to enjoy the grounds. By 1933, the grounds had grown in popularity to the point that the Asarnows felt it was only natural to begin collecting a $.25/person entry fee to the general public. This was the impetus for the establishment of a family-owned business that is still in operation today under the Forest Lodge brand name. It was the Esso Corporation (now Exxon Mobil) that hosted the first company picnic, which took place in the mid-1930s. The Asarnow family sold the property to Robert Evans in 1968, and Evans continued to operate the company until 1980, keeping the picnic grounds available to the public for a fee and diversifying services by converting the venue into a Country Rock Bar at night. Robert Evans died in 1980. The Forest Lodge property was bought by Charlie Alberto in 1980, and he has since worked to preserve the original concept of the Asarnow family by providing a location for guests to unwind and enjoy the fresh rural air. In addition, he revived the venue by modernizing the menus, amenities, and entertainment to meet the demands of the present and future generations of guests. The Alberto family took the choice to lock their doors to the public shortly after acquiring the firm from the previous owners. Guests arriving without a reservation were being turned away from their business functions, which were becoming increasingly popular. Aside from that, the Alberto family shuttered the Country Rock Bar in 1981 to build the Sherwood Chalet, which today serves as a venue for events ranging from weddings and bar mitzvahs to business meetings and seminars. Forest Lodge has grown from a picnic site to a Full Service Event Coordination company, specializing in all types of corporate events, including seminars, meetings, company picnics, team building events, morale boosters, and elegant outdoor events, in addition to the social events held in The Sherwood Chalet. Forest Lodge is owned and operated by the Alberto family. Aside from that, Forest Lodge acts as a first employment for many young individuals in the local region, with up to 150 part-time staff members working there. The management team consists of Charlie Alberto III, President, Vice President Linda A. Taylor, CMP, General Manager Brian Howard, and Sharon Pier, Assistant Events Manager. Other members of the management team include: As a team, we have decades of combined expertise that can help you make your event absolutely exceptional!

Water Works formerly drew visitors from all over the world, including Charles Dickens, who commended the "pleasing design" of the building for its blend of graceful Neoclassical architecture on the outside with then-revolutionary technology on the inside. Columned walkways, a vintage gazebo, the Art Museum perched dramatically above, and Boathouse Row stretched out along the Schuylkill River just beyond are some of the features that contribute to the Water Works' status as one of the city's most picturesque settings. Today, the Water Works offers lavish interior spaces that are replete with rich contemporary luxury. Adding an outdoor ceremony to your reception is something that should come as no surprise given the famous views, classically exquisite structures, groomed fields, and gardens that are all around you. The Water Works is home to a diverse range of environments, the likes of which are not often found in a single venue. The breathtaking scenery, tasteful architecture, and beautifully manicured grounds make it an obvious decision to hold the ceremony and reception outside.
