Baker Community Center is a historic recreation and community facility operated by the St. Charles Park District in downtown St. Charles, Illinois. Dedicated on May 1, 1926, as a gift from Edward J. and Harriet Rockwell Baker in memory of their son and local World War I veterans, the 19,150-square-foot building has served the community for a century — hosting classes, performances, and private events across its auditorium stage, lounge, and multipurpose rooms. Rentable spaces accommodate groups from 35 to 150 guests, with tables, chairs, and setup included in every rental. The center offers a full kitchen, in-house sound system, and on-street parking. A $1 million accessibility renovation in 2017 updated floors, entryways, and amenities throughout the building. The Barn at Hornbaker Gardens is a four-season event venue built in 2015 on the grounds of Hornbaker Gardens, a destination garden center and botanical property that has grown over 40 acres since its founding in 1987. Set in Princeton, Illinois, the property surrounds the Barn with mature botanical gardens, an arboretum, a native Illinois prairie, and manicured meadows — giving couples and their guests an expansive natural backdrop at every turn. The centerpiece is the 7,000-square-foot Great Room, which welcomes up to 350 guests for ceremonies and receptions. Three custom chandeliers hang from a vaulted wood ceiling, while grand windows frame views of the gardens. Glenwood Park is a 22-acre outdoor venue managed by the Macomb Park District, set within an oak-hickory forest with more than 150 years of natural history. Rolling hills, towering trees, and a pond create a woodland backdrop suited to gatherings that call for open air and green space over a traditional indoor setting. At the heart of the park stands the Glenwood Stone Shelter, a WPA-era structure built in 1938 that has hosted reunions, picnics, dances, and community celebrations for generations. The shelter accommodates up to 100 guests and sits at the center of the park's grounds. Additional outdoor areas, including an expansive lawn with room for a tent, offer flexibility for larger gatherings or ceremonies with sunset views over the pond. The property traces its roots to the Mount Hope Settlement, established before 1840 in Calhoun County. The centerpiece three-story barn was constructed around 1830 and rebuilt and expanded between 1860 and 1870, with its basement hand-excavated by removing 750 tons of dirt and original redwood timbers shipped in by steamboat from Hamburg. At its peak around 1900, the settlement included tenant houses, blacksmith shops, a sawmill, and more than 15,000 orchard trees. Today, the property combines that timeless architecture with a koi pond, apple orchard, and sweeping hilltop views.
