Montrio Bistro occupies a restored 1910 firehouse at 414 Calle Principal in downtown Monterey, California — a building recognized as the first firehouse in California. Since opening in 1995, the restaurant has built a reputation as one of Monterey County's premier dining destinations, holding Michelin recognition since 2025 and earning the OpenTable Diners' Choice award. The restaurant serves bold California Fusion cuisine built around fresh, locally sourced ingredients, prepared from scratch with a wood-fired grill and smoker at the heart of the kitchen. Classic California hospitality anchors the experience in an elegant yet relaxed dining room and lively lounge. For private events, Rio Grill offers two dedicated dining rooms. The Santa Fe Room accommodates up to 45 guests seated or 80 for cocktail receptions in a bright, 681-square-foot space with a cantina-style bar. The Old Whaling Station Historic Adobe & Gardens is a nationally registered historic landmark situated in Monterey's Heritage Harbor, steps from Fisherman's Wharf and Monterey Bay. Built in 1847 by Scottish adventurer David Wight as a family residence, the two-story adobe later served as headquarters for the Old Monterey Whaling Company in the 1850s — giving the property its enduring name. Since 1980, the Junior League of Monterey County has leased the adobe from the California State Department of Parks and Recreation, operating it as a historic house museum and event venue. The property offers both indoor and outdoor settings for weddings, receptions, parties, corporate gatherings, and other private events.
