Originally built as the barn and stables for Oakland, a large Howard County estate, the building was acquired by the Kittamaqundi Community in 1972 and thoughtfully renovated by 1977 — adding new flooring, lofted spaces, finished woodwork, and two stone fireplaces that now anchor both levels. The venue accommodates up to 125 guests and offers a seamless blend of indoor and outdoor settings. Inside, exposed wooden beams, original stone walls, and fireplace surrounds lend a warm and distinctive character that sets it apart from conventional banquet spaces. Outside, the Sacred Garden — completed in 2014 — provides a landscaped ceremony setting with a pond and waterfall, a labyrinth, an archway, and ample seating, all within a tree-lined natural landscape. Built in 1738 as a private manor for Caleb and Priscilla Dorsey, the property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Lawyers Hill Historic District. Over its nearly three centuries of history, the estate has passed through the stewardship of the Smithsonian Institution, the American Chemical Society, and Howard Community College before Howard County acquired it in 2012. The grounds encompass formal gardens, a picturesque aqua garden, rolling terrain, a pond, and a collection of historic structures including the Manor House, Carriage House, Cottage House, and a large barn. The signature outdoor reception tent — a 60x100 white peaked structure on a brick pad — accommodates up to 250 guests and includes gold chandeliers, perimeter lighting, an 18x24 dance floor, and gold chiavari chairs. The Liriodendron is a historic Georgian Revival mansion in Bel Air, Maryland, built in 1898 as the summer residence of Dr. Howard Atwood Kelly, one of Johns Hopkins Medical School's four founding physicians. Designed by the Baltimore architectural firm Wyatt & Nolting and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the estate sits on more than 100 acres of wooded grounds and is now operated by the nonprofit Liriodendron Foundation as a cultural and events destination. The mansion accommodates up to 120 guests for weddings, social gatherings, and corporate events. Indoor spaces include a dining room with a working fireplace and chandelier, a center room with double doors that open to a terrace, and a music room with hardwood floors suited for dancing. Outdoor ceremony options include a wisteria-draped trellis, two large porticos, and boxwood and flower gardens. A bridal suite and a separate groom's room are available for day-of preparation. Visitors can stay in our historic 17th Century Waterfront Manor House, which offers 5-star B&B accommodations and is surrounded by our 65-acre family farm. Our stately Tobacco Barn, vineyard, cut flower farm, rolling acres of lavender, and apiary, all built in the 1930s, will leave you in wonder of what we have to offer. 2005-2007 Buchanan Hall was determined to be in need of repair in 1942 after an inspection of the building's structure. It was decided to form a new trustee committee, which included Mrs. Paul Mellon as Chairman, Lieut. Walter J. Williams as Vice Chairman, Rozier Dulany as secretary, and Mrs. Joseph G. Gibson as treasurer, with Mrs. Paul Mellon serving as Chairman. Mrs. William G. Fletcher and Mrs. Thomas Glascock were also on the committee, which met once a month. The renovation of the building proceeded as planned, with funds raised through private contributions solicited by the committee's members. Upon completion, an item titled "Upperville's Latest Community Project is Brought to a Close" ran in the Fauquier Times-Democrat on November 5, 1942, with the headline "Upperville's Latest Community Project is Brought to a Close." According to the report, "the building will be available for use by churches, humanitarian organizations, the Red Cross, and the Boy Scouts at no cost." For dances and private gatherings, there will be a little cost levied. Additionally, in the event that Washington is evacuated, the hall will be required for hospital or canteen operations." The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Environmental Education Building anchors the campus and includes exhibit spaces home to live animal ambassadors. The Loft is a place where you can go to The Loft, which was once the barn's hayloft, still has its original wooden high beam ceilings and a new all-wood floor that allows for a choice of set up types. Enter the Loft via the iconic silo stairwell and take some one-of-a-kind shots. The area is warm and inviting thanks to the earth tones and maple seats. The Courtyard is a flower-filled courtyard adjacent to the Smithy/Tack Room that provides the perfect background for your special day. The Courtyard is a great place for photos and for people to relax and enjoy some fresh air. For an additional cost, white, fan-backed chairs would be provided for your wedding guests. Tack Room/Smithy This fully carpeted room, located on the main level, is excellent for meetings and small groups. Cocktails can be served in the Smithy/Tack room prior to your reception. The cows used to enter the barn through the large glass doors that look out onto a flower-filled courtyard. A Wedding Designed by You The Other Barn in Oakland Mills, which has recently been refurbished, is a large celebration venue with rustic charm. Originally a dairy barn, it now offers a one-of-a-kind, sophisticated but welcoming ambience that is ideal for commemorating life's milestones. On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, The Other Barn is perfect for an outdoor wedding ceremony and celebration. Monday through Thursday, the facility is available for small gatherings, rehearsal dinners, business meetings, and non-wedding activities. You are welcome to bring in your own licensed caterer. A full kitchen, a large ice machine, and ice chests are available at The Other Barn. The tables and chairs are set up and taken down for you. You furnish the tablecloths, which are then placed by you, your designer, or your caterer. A comfortable wedding suite is ideal for the bride's last-minute touch-ups.
