Built in 1923 by publishing magnate Walter Walker, the theatre was named through a community contest — the name Avalon drawn from Welsh and Celtic tradition, a nod to the apple orchards that once defined the region. After the City of Grand Junction acquired the deteriorating structure in 1996, a significant restoration completed in 2014 expanded seating to 1,096 and gave the theatre its current intimate acoustic quality.
