The Stranahan House is the repository for the history of a family, a home, and the founding of a city. It was erected in 1901 by Frank Stranahan, who is widely regarded as Fort Lauderdale's founding father, and his wife Ivy Cromartie Stranahan, who was the area's first schoolteacher. Located in Broward County, it is the oldest surviving structure in the county, and it has functioned as a trading post, post office, town hall, and residence for the Stranahans. Located on the banks of the New River, the home is a traditional wood-frame construction with expansive porches and a breathtaking view of the river. When the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society and the Fort Lauderdale Board of Realtors completed a meticulous restoration of the home, it was officially opened to the public as a historic house museum in 1984.
