The village traces its origins to informal 18th-century settlements near Mission San Antonio de Valero and was restored beginning in 1939 under an ordinance dedicated to promoting Pan-American unity, giving the surrounding streets their present-day character of preserved adobe and limestone buildings, artisan shops, and courtyards. A medium-size venue, Plaza Juarez accommodates up to 500 guests for a reception or 300 for a seated dinner. Set on 25 landscaped acres in San Antonio, the McNay Art Museum is anchored by a 24-room Spanish Colonial Revival mansion designed by architects Atlee and Robert Ayres. The mansion, its surrounding grounds, and Marion Koogler McNay's personal art collection became the founding gift for Texas's first museum of modern art, which opened to the public in 1954. In 2008, French architect Jean-Paul Viguier added the Jane and Arthur Stieren Center for Exhibitions, a 45,000-square-foot expansion housing additional galleries, a sculpture garden, a lecture hall, and classrooms. Today the museum holds more than 22,000 works spanning medieval and Renaissance art through contemporary pieces.
