Oldest House
16 Sunset Hill, Nantucket, MA 02554, USA- Spaces for 200 Guests
The Jethro Coffin House, also known as the Oldest House on Sunset Hill, dates back to 1686, making it arguably the oldest dwelling still standing on its original site in Nantucket. At the time of its construction, Nantucket's English population numbered in the hundreds, while the native Wampanoag people outnumbered them by a considerable margin. Constructed as a wedding gift for Jethro Coffin (1663–1727) and Mary Gardner (1670–1767), the house symbolizes the union of two prominent Nantucket families. Jethro, being the grandson of one of the island's original landowners, Tristram Coffin, and Mary, the daughter of John Gardner, a key figure in the island's Half-Share Revolt. Despite historical tensions between the Gardners and the Coffins, Mary and Jethro's marriage helped bridge divides and bring the families together. Situated on Gardner land and built with Coffin lumber, the house serves as a tangible representation of this familial unity. In the late 19th century, the house fell into disuse and disrepair until a Coffin family reunion in 1881 sparked renewed interest. The Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) acquired the property in 1923, and the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities (now Historic New England) began extensive restoration work in 1927 to restore the house to its original state. Designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1968, the house faced further challenges in 1987 when it was struck by lightning, leading to significant damage requiring extensive repairs and partial reconstruction of the roof and chimney. Today, the Oldest House stands as a tribute to Nantucket's earliest English settlers, offering visitors a window into life on the island in the 17th century. Efforts have been undertaken to recreate the historical landscape surrounding the Oldest House. The kitchen garden, situated behind the house, is a reconstruction of a circa-1700 herb and vegetable garden, maintained without modern fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides. Using a raised-bed system typical of the era, the garden features common vegetables such as carrots, onions, cabbages, and parsnips, alongside around thirty varieties of herbs used for culinary, medicinal, or household purposes.

The Sankaty Head Golf Club is a private golf club that also features tennis and beach facilities. It offers its members and their families first-rate recreational and social activities in a setting that is low-key and relaxed. The game of golf is the principal emphasis of the Club. The golf course is known for being an exceptional example of golf design in the links style, and it is bordered by undeveloped area and various types of animals. The natural splendor and tranquility of the area are highly valued by the membership, and they consider the course's difficulty to be of equal importance. The Caddy Camp, which is made possible by the generous contributions of club members to the Sankaty Head Foundation, contributes to the overall quality of the golf experience at Sankaty. This camp is the last of its type and is an essential component of the Sankaty golfing legacy. It provides young people from all over the country with opportunities to participate in recreational activities and it also offers a scholarship program. The mission of Sankaty is to organize events in which several members of a family can take part. Tennis and swimming facilities at the Beach Club offer a variety of activities for younger children, teenagers, and adult members. Whereas golf is primarily oriented toward members and their spouses, with limited play by children under the age of college, tennis and swimming facilities at the Beach Club offer a variety of activities. The Club's social activity calendar is confined to certain events that are spread out over the summer season. This is done in acknowledgment of the fact that the Island offers a wide variety of alternative activities. The services and employees are kind and competent, and they are up to date while avoiding following any particular fashion trends. The food at the restaurant is delicious, and the gatherings are a lot of fun. The members place a high value on Sankaty's relaxed and friendly environment, which is unrestricted by an excessive number of rules and restrictions. The Club is dedicated to maintaining the values that have made it successful in the past while also adapting to the requirements of the present and future. The amenities at the Beach Club and the Clubhouse are both practical and comfortable, and their upkeep and modernisation are planned for in phases that adhere to the budget while yet preserving the historical nature of the buildings. Despite the fact that its facilities only allow for a total membership of 550 people, the Club has, throughout its history, kept its doors open to eligible new member applications who were sponsored by existing members. This strategy has served the Club well during times of high demand, and it has gained the faith of its members that admissions to membership are conducted democratically and equitably. This has earned the Club the confidence of its members. Properly sponsored legacies are given some precedence toward membership in order to ensure that the membership continues to value a strong emphasis on family. The Club, on the other hand, is of the opinion that it is vital to maintain a steady influx of new applicants for membership in order to forestall the risk of the organization becoming inbred through the implementation of a legacy policy. It is not due to the economic constraints of its membership that Sankaty is an affordable club; rather, it is due to the preference of its members. A significant amount of effort has been put in order to prevent the Club from being economically exclusive. The Club has ensured that the costs of its day-to-day operations and capital enhancements are fairly distributed among its membership in order to sustain this quality as well as the high standard of its establishments and offerings. In a nutshell, the mission of Sankaty is to establish itself as an exceptional family golf club that features a distinctive design, an engaging social program, and a summertime recreational atmosphere. The objective is to find a happy medium between modernization and preservation of established practices, with the end result being an improvement in the level of satisfaction experienced by members on an annual basis. The vast views of the Atlantic Ocean and Sesachacha Pond that are offered by the Sankaty Head Beach Club are available to guests whether they are exchanging vows or enjoying a gathering under a tent. Martha's Vineyard Agricultural Society
West Tisbury, MA, USA- Spaces for 333-1,344 Guests
The land and structures at 35 Panhandle Road in West Tisbury are steeped in history, and this is evident throughout the property. It was formerly owned by Edwin Newhall "Bob" Woods (the great-grandson of founding father and first Secretary of the Society, Henry L. Whiting), and it now contains the "new" Agricultural Hall, two animal barns, an outdoor riding ring, and outbuildings. The Agricultural Hall was built on 20+ acres at the intersection of State and Panhandle Roads. Surrounded by open space with old growth trees dispersed throughout and backed on one side by a big hayfield, the location emanates peace and beauty typical of rural settings. A wooden barn formerly located in rural New Hampshire was meticulously demolished board by board, numbered labeled, packed, and packaged before being transported to the island by 42 volunteer 'Barnbusters' in the spring of 1994. In November of that year, hundreds of people from all around the island came together in a confluence of generosity to assist in the raising, sheathing, shingling, and painting of the 'new' Hall. Adding a front hall and verandah in the style and spirit of the 'old' Ag Hall, which is now known as the Grange Hall, on State Road, was a priority. It is possible to rent out the land for a limited number of events such as weddings and funerals, as well as religious, non-profit, educational, and governmental functions, as well as agricultural and allied operations. Birthday and anniversary parties are not permitted at this time. Please get in touch with us to find out if your event comes into one of these categories, to check on date availability, and to obtain the most up-to-date rental pricing.
