In 1914, an Indian grave was discovered on the Hewlett estate of John N. Auerbach. Among the findings were skeletal remains, arrow and spear heads, and a large quantity of copper beads known by the Indians as“sewan”. Auerbach anglicized the name for the beads to Seawane, chose it for his estate, and then it was used for the founding of The Seawane Club in 1927. Landmark on Main Street is a not-for-profit performing arts and community center at 232 Main Street in Port Washington, NY. The venue is housed within a 1994 renovation of an 87-year-old former school building, transformed into a 25,000-square-foot complex that includes the 425-seat Jeanne Rimsky Theater. The Jeanne Rimsky Theater has welcomed performers spanning concerts, Broadway, folk, and jazz — including Rufus Wainwright, Graham Nash, Christine Ebersole, and Mandy Patinkin — as well as events ranging from speaker engagements and dance performances to meetings and birthday parties. The Bayside Historical Society makes its home in The Castle, a Gothic Revival landmark building completed in 1887 as the Officers' Club for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Fort Totten in Bayside, Queens. Designated a New York City landmark in 1974 and listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places in 1986, the building has served as the Society's base of operations since 1984 following a major restoration. The Castle is available for private site rentals including weddings, celebrations, and reunions, accommodating up to 125 guests. Spaces include a grand ballroom with waterfront views, a sunlit reception hall with cathedral ceilings, an intimate dining room with an adjoining gallery, and a first-floor board room. Our stunning formal dining and entertainment room, which was built by the King Family in 1810, is part of the final enlargement that was added to the home to create the structure that is now known as King Manor. There are genuine Federal Period design components in the space, which were meant to produce a warm, bright environment in an era before electric lights, as well as great natural acoustics for music performance. Meetings, tiny wedding ceremonies, book readings, recitals, and other small private events are all possible in this space. However, while food and liquids are not permitted in our period rooms, we do have a large foyer where light snacks and drinks can be offered, as well as access to the backyard if needed. A more informal private space, our North Kitchen is ideal for off-site meetings, classroom sessions, a bridal party dressing room or storage space while your event is taking place. Within a New York City park, King Manor offers a huge backyard space that can accommodate renting tents up to 30 by 40 feet in size, making it ideal for larger occasions. Our venue is private and secure, making it an ideal setting for events such as weddings, board retreats, cocktail hours, and other gatherings.
