The Bonham Exchange occupies a downtown San Antonio building constructed in 1891 for a German athletic association as Turner Hall, built of pressed Chicago brick, Kerrville limestone, and granite. After serving as a USO office and post office storage facility, the building was converted into a nightclub in 1981 and expanded into a 25,000-square-foot, three-level venue with a large patio. A 2012 renovation restored more than 10,000 square feet of hardwood dance floor throughout the space. Over three decades, the venue has hosted performers including Tina Turner, Prince, and RuPaul, alongside touring Broadway productions. The property centers on two restored structures: the Victorian House, built in 1909 by Henry Emmitt Smith using heart pine lumber and cypress shingles milled on-site, and a Log Cabin dating to circa 1874. After decades of family stewardship — Henry Smith himself accumulated over 1,000 acres before passing parcels to his nine children — the estate was purchased in 2000 and restored over two decades before launching as a wedding and events venue. Ceremonies take place at five locations on the grounds, including a custom chapel accommodating up to 30 guests with stained-glass windows salvaged from a New Orleans church, and the open-air Garden Lawn for larger outdoor ceremonies. The 4,800-square-foot covered Courtyard Pavilion serves receptions for up to 250 guests, with a wood-burning fireplace and patio heaters available. The construction of ten on-site cabins is scheduled for late 2021 and 2022. 6,000 square feet of room for up to 250 guests in a rustic, elegant barn location great for your wedding. High beamed ceilings with exquisite yet rustic lighting will be featured in this temperature-controlled arena. With simple gray shiplap and rustic elements, the interior will be gorgeous. The Groomsmen and the Bridal Party each have dressing rooms in the front of the venue, with the Bridal dressing room having direct access to the Ladies Restroom. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the building was transformed into a museum following a community-driven initiative launched in 1986. The museum completed three of four planned construction phases, resulting in 18,000 square feet of gallery space, exhibit preparation areas, and a conference center.
