The property traces back to the 1940s, when the Johnston family donated 400 acres of woodland, before Broad Street United Methodist Church transformed it into a retreat and event center in the 1980s. The grounds combine forest, trails, and a lake, giving weddings, retreats, corporate events, and reunions a natural, faith-centered backdrop. Several venues on the property serve different event sizes. Hurt Lodge is built with wood beam construction, stained concrete floors, and a rock fireplace, and can be paired with its outdoor deck for larger gatherings. The Woodland Center, the newest facility at 4,500 square feet, opens onto a back deck facing the field and sunset, making it suited to large weddings and receptions. Lakeside, set at Hurt Lake, hosts ceremonies and photos against the water, with paddle boarding, canoeing, fishing, and swimming available nearby. Catering is handled in-house by chef Ceasar Thomas, with outside caterers also permitted, and the venue does not allow alcohol on the property. Named for a historic Cherokee leader, Tsali Notch Vineyard is a working vineyard and winery tucked into the foothills of Madisonville, Tennessee, within the Tennessee Overhill Heritage Area and along the route to the Cherohala Skyway. The 202-acre estate is planted with more than 6,000 muscadine vines across 21 miles of trellis, with the Great Smoky Mountains rising in the distance — a setting the vineyard describes as an idyllic backdrop for its wines and its events alike. As Tennessee's largest muscadine grape producer, the vineyard is known for award-winning wines crafted from "America's Wild Grape," grown without chemicals across six varieties. Beyond wine tastings, Tsali Notch hosts weddings, receptions, reunions, and civic gatherings across several venue spaces: the picturesque vineyard grounds, the Vineyard Tasting Room for intimate gatherings, the Upper Barn for larger celebrations, and the Jackson Lounge, a lovingly restored 19th-century farmhouse offering a more relaxed atmosphere. Each fall, the vineyard opens its rows to the public for muscadine picking, drawing visitors out among the vines to harvest grapes for wine, juice, or jelly — a seasonal tradition that reflects the vineyard's blend of rustic charm and working agricultural heritage.
