The San Jose Clubhouse has been organizing intimate social gatherings for our San Jose neighbors for over a century. This Arts and Crafts bungalow, established by the ladies of We and Our Neighbors, is a historic landmark and California's oldest continuously utilized women's clubhouse. The San Jose Clubhouse welcomes you to host your next event with fewer than 80 attendees. This charming establishment has been meticulously preserved and upgraded to retain its original charm. It's perfect for modest weddings, anniversaries, bridal or baby showers, memorials, business meetings, birthday parties, boutiques, art displays and music recitals, and more, thanks to its comfortable masonry fireplace, hardwood floors, and stained glass lighting. Our History The Club at Castlewood traces its origins to the famous Hacienda del Pozo de Verona estate, which was built by George and Phoebe Hearst, the parents of publishing mogul William Randolph Hearst. From 1891 to 1919, Phoebe Hearst's Hacienda, created by Julia Morgan, served as her house and sanctuary. At "the house of hospitality." hosting parties and gatherings for up to 300 people was normal. In the 53 room mansion, the Hearst's reputation for throwing a grand party was certainly upheld. Local businessmen bought the land in 1924, and the mansion served as the clubhouse for the original Castlewood Country Club. The name was chosen because it matched Phoebe's home's wooded hills and castle like aspect. Private Events at The Club at Castlewood: There is no such thing as a huge plan or a little gathering. Dunsmuir Hellman Historic Estate occupies 50 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds in a crescent-shaped valley near the southeastern edge of Oakland, California. At its heart stands a 37-room Neoclassical Revival mansion built in 1899, surrounded by sprawling lawns, duck-filled ponds, and gardens whose design was informed by John McLaren, the landscape architect best known for shaping San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. The estate is owned and operated by the City of Oakland's Parks, Recreation & Youth Development department and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Four distinct outdoor and indoor event spaces accommodate gatherings ranging from intimate ceremonies of 50 guests on the Mansion Veranda to receptions and corporate events of up to 200 guests in the Garden Pavilion. The estate is available for weddings, receptions, birthday parties, anniversary celebrations, corporate retreats, seminars, and family reunions. For marriages and wedding photography, the Estate's 25 acres of land provides a captivating background. The peaceful koi pond has an island in the center, and the happy couple walks across a bridge to the location where their ceremony will take place on the island. Guests will be surrounded by towering redwood trees and will be able to see and hear a waterfall falling into a pond as they enter the property. The reception will be hosted in a rustic barn surrounded by the Pinot Noir Vineyard, with towering ceilings of exposed beams and fairy lights adorning the walls. Its enormous windows and wide barn doors allow guests to move easily from inside the barn to the 4,000 sq. ft. patio, where they may take in the sunset vista views of Monterey Bay, the Santa Cruz Mountains, and valleys. We are a bonded winery and the reception hall sits in the middle of the Pinot Noir vineyard. Llamas and alpacas graze the surrounding 25 acres. An Outdoor Wedding The serenity of the pond creates the ideal spot for that cherished moment. Inside the two thousand year old redwood “cathedral” is one of several location choices for joining families. Or create your own location. An island in the redwood-sheltered pond provides an intimate ceremony location. On the shore we have room to seat a hundred guests. The serene waterfall provides the ideal backdrop for the newly weds photo. Reception The 4,000 sq ft patio surrounding this rustic barn was once home to our llamas and alpacas.
