From Galveston to Houston In 1870 a group of Masons gathered frequently for lunch at the Knickerbocker Cottage on Sixth Avenue in New York City. At a special table on the second floor, a particularly fun-loving group of men met regularly. Among the regulars were Walter M. Fleming, M.D. and William J. “Billy” Florence, an actor. The group frequently talked about starting a new fraternity for Masons – one centered on fun and fellowship, more than ritual. Fleming and Florence took this idea seriously enough to do something about it. ​ Billy Florence had been on tour in France and had been invited to a party given by an Arabian diplomat. The exotic style, flavors, and music of the Arabian-themed party inspired him to suggest this as a theme for the new fraternity. Walter Fleming, a devoted fraternity brother, built on Fleming’s ideas and used his knowledge of fraternal ritual to transform the Arabian theme into the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine (A.A.O.N.M.S.). ​ With the help of the Knickerbocker Cottage regulars, Fleming drafted the ritual, designed the emblem and costumes, formulated a salutation and declared that members would wear the red fez. The first meeting of Mecca Shriners, the first temple (chapter) established in the United States, was held September 26, 1872. As word got out about the fledgling organization, membership grew rapidly, spreading across the U.S. In the early 1900s, membership spread into Canada, Mexico, and Panama. Today, Shriners International is a fraternity with nearly 200 temples in several countries, thousands of clubs around the world and hundreds of thousands of members dedicated to the principles of brotherly love, relief and truth.

Sea Star Base Galveston is a nonprofit maritime and aquatics campus set on 10 acres along Offatt's Bayou and Galveston Bay, founded by Captain Charles and Rosemary Doolin as a sailing center that grew into a full waterfront complex. The LEED Platinum-certified, fully handicapped-accessible facility includes a fleet of 39 boats, a seagoing classroom, a swimming pool, and a modern marina, alongside its mission to deliver marine, maritime, and aquatics-based education for youth and adults. The campus doubles as an event venue for weddings, corporate gatherings, and community celebrations. Couples can exchange vows in an open-air chapel overlooking the marinas of Offatt's Bayou, while The Commodore banquet hall offers floor-to-ceiling views of Galveston Bay, where dolphins can often be spotted in the water, for dinners, dances, and galas. This one-of-a-kind venue can accommodate up to 350 people for a banquet round and up to 400 people for a reception style setting. The Tremont House is a historic hotel in Galveston's Strand Historic District, tracing its roots to a Galveston institution dating to 1839. The current building, once the Leon & H. Blum Building, was constructed in 1879 and restored by George and Cynthia Mitchell in the early 1980s, reopening in 1985 as the first major hotel to open in downtown Galveston in sixty years. Today the hotel offers nearly 17,000 square feet of flexible event space across eight venues, accommodating gatherings from 8 to 800 guests. The Tremont Ballroom, on the upper level of the historic Davidson building, features 14-foot ceilings and access to a balcony overlooking the Galveston Mardi Gras arch, while the Royal Room offers exposed brick and floor-to-ceiling windows looking out on historic downtown. The 1877 Tall Ship ELISSA is a square-rigged iron barque, restored in 1982 and now a floating museum that still actively sails — one of only three ships of her kind in the world to do so. Berthed at the Galveston Historic Seaport, she is a National Historic Landmark and the Official Tall Ship of Texas, a symbol of the Gulf Coast's beginnings as a seaport that welcomes more than 40,000 visitors each year. For private events, the ship and museum site offer a romantic waterfront setting, with moonlight silhouetting the masts. Guests have access to ELISSA's decks, galleries, officers' quarters, and galley — used as a serving area or bar — along with the museum's pier, galleries, and restrooms. The site accommodates up to 500 guests across the ship and museum, or 300 for a seated dinner on the pier, making it well suited to weddings, receptions, and social gatherings. All functions are catered, as no kitchen facilities are on site.
