Hopelands Gardens is a 14-acre public garden in Aiken, South Carolina, developed from the winter estate of Hope Goddard Iselin, who planted the property's oaks and cedars and left it to the city upon her death in 1970. Landscape architect Robert Marvin designed the formal gardens in 1974 to draw the community together for special events, and that legacy continues today: garden weddings are popular here, with ceremonies held on the green, near the Joan B. Tower Gazebo overlooking the lake, or at the Promenade Overlook and Reflecting Pools, built on the foundation of the original Iselin residence. The grounds are wrapped behind a serpentine brick wall beneath a canopy of century-old live oaks, deodar cedars, and magnolias, with three fountains, an octagonal brick labyrinth patterned after a 13th-century design at Amiens Cathedral, and a wetlands area crossed by a wooden bridge. The Lace House at Arsenal Hill is a historic French-style mansion in downtown Columbia, South Carolina, built in 1854-1855 as a wedding gift from railroad executive John Caldwell to his daughter Mary and her husband, Thomas Robertson. A French architect known for his work in New Orleans designed the home, and it retains original details including intricate ironwork, ornamental cornices, parquet floors, figured glass doors, and brass chandeliers. The State of South Carolina acquired the property in 1968, and it later served as the Governor's official guest house before a 2004 interior refurbishment adapted the home for weddings, rehearsal dinners, corporate events, and other celebrations. The gardens received landscape improvements in 2008 under the direction of First Lady Jenny Sanford. Givhans Ferry State Park is a 988-acre lowcountry retreat set along the Edisto River, the longest free-flowing blackwater river in North America. On our lovely patio and within the restaurant, Lewis Barbecue offers full service private gatherings. John Lewis, the founder and maestro of BBQ, grew up in El Paso, Texas, and came to Austin at the age of 18 to begin his culinary career. John's parents got him a New Braunfels smoker for his birthday around this time, and he began dabbling in Austin's long-standing backyard BBQ culture. He immediately began to experiment with the design and construction of both his smokers and his meats in order to achieve a better result. After spending time in Denver developing his skills on the competition barbecue circuit, John returned to Austin to assist his buddy Aaron Franklin with the opening of Franklin Barbecue, and then joined with LeAnn Mueller to open the much-loved La Barbecue. John went to the Holy City in March 2015 with his smokers to introduce the Lowcountry to the amazing world of Texas BBQ. Lewis Barbecue, which he and his team established in June 2016, has been acclaimed as one of the greatest in the country by publications such as Southern Living, Conde Nast Traveler, Garden & Gun, and others for its famed brisket, honky tonk music, and laid-back attitude.
