Since three generations ago, our family has made use of this teeny-tiny piece of Texas, sometimes known as paradise. In the beginning, it was our grandfather's small 80-acre "place in the country," which he used to enjoy the outdoors on by hunting, fishing, and simply taking in the scenery. Although he did not cultivate vegetables or raise poultry here, he did have a horse for the grandkids to ride, several cows (mainly as pets), and a Brahma Bull named Baby. He referred to this place as his "farm" (his biggest pet of all). Our parents built the home as well as the movie theater, which is now known as The Ruby Chapel, in the early 1990s, and it served as their Texas residence for the subsequent 20 years. As they became older, they "downsized" the land until it was ultimately reduced to the current size of 7 acres.

McPherson Cellars occupies a restored Coca-Cola bottling plant in downtown Lubbock's historic Depot District, where a tasting room, lofty industrial interior, and outdoor courtyard combine to host weddings, corporate functions, rehearsal dinners, and private celebrations. The winery traces its roots to Dr. Clinton "Doc" McPherson, who began experimenting with vine plantings on the Texas High Plains in the 1960s and helped found the Texas High Plains AVA. His son, winemaker Kim McPherson, studied enology and viticulture at UC Davis and worked in Napa Valley before returning home to continue his father's work. The winery sources its grapes exclusively from High Plains growers, including Lahey Vineyards, Timmons Estate, and Lost Draw Vineyards, farmed at elevations between 2,800 and 4,000 feet. For events, the Event Center, Tasting Room, Private Tasting Room, and outdoor courtyard can be booked together or separately, accommodating gatherings from intimate cocktail receptions to weddings of up to 200 guests. We purchased our Paradise home eight years ago with the intention of retiring there eventually. Our daughter urged us to build a wedding barn when she got engaged.
