The Space Downtown is a private event and dining venue in Charlottesville, Virginia, created in late 2010 by chefs and longtime business partners Tim Burgess and Vincent Derquenne. The building's history goes back further: the pair opened their first restaurant, Metropolitain, in the same location in 1991 and ran it until 2003, when they sold the restaurant but kept ownership of the building. When the space became vacant again in early 2010, Burgess and Derquenne reopened it exclusively for private parties, and it has operated as a dedicated event venue ever since. The chefs also own Bizou and Bang, two restaurants located nearby. Private dining is the venue's specialty, with a custom menu, floor plan, and atmosphere built around each event. The property is run by the Woodward family, whose own daughter's country wedding on the land inspired them to open it to other couples and families. The ranch centers on a converted stone barn that once served as a horse barn, now home to a bridal loft with a dining hall that seats 50 or more, four themed queen guest rooms, and a fully equipped kitchen. Downstairs, a covered pavilion and an open-air outdoor chapel offer additional ceremony and gathering space, connected by a breezeway with its own stage and seating. The 2,500-square-foot building houses an indoor classroom ringed by floor-to-ceiling windows and glass doors that open onto the surrounding woodland landscape, along with a large covered outdoor deck. The Nature Center Classroom accommodates up to 60 guests in banquet, theater, or classroom configurations. Rentals include 13 rectangular buffet-style tables, 60 chairs, a kitchenette with refrigerator, microwave, and coffee maker, and a dedicated on-site facility attendant. For weddings and private events, the Carriage House — once a historic livery stable — serves as the venue's largest and most popular space, with a covered courtyard featuring a center fountain and Pracht Alley, a lit alleyway connecting to Benson Street that's often used for photos and smaller gatherings.
