Created on land once farmed by the Wheaton family, the park is maintained by the Friends of Salt Springs Park, a nonprofit founded in 1994 that manages the site in partnership with the Commonwealth — the only such arrangement among Pennsylvania's state parks. The grounds include nearly 15 miles of trails through gorges and old-growth hemlock forest, three waterfalls on Silver Creek, historic farm buildings, and the 1840s Wheaton House, which houses environmental and historical exhibits.
